I worked for a major defense contractor for 17
years. For the first eleven years, I worked shift work (three different
shifts). Once I stopped working shift work, I thought I would finally be happy
and feel fulfilled. However, the opposite was true - I felt totally
miserable. Sitting at a desk and staring at a computer everyday for the past
six years was driving me crazy!
I began to think of what really made me happy in
life. My whole life has been a love affair with animals. I grew up having pet
turtles, snakes, hamsters, gerbils, rabbits, cats, and dogs. I once even had a
pet duck. I learned early in my life to respect and love all animals. My soft
spot, however, has always been for dogs.
With my love of animals in mind, I began to think of
a way to cater to man’s best friend. I knew I loved to exercise and enjoyed
being busy every day. I could not wait until I returned home from work to take
my dogs out to run and play for hours. I also loved training my dogs and
seeing their happy faces when they accomplished something that made us both
proud. BINGO! I found my answer!
In 2005, I joined Pup ‘N Iron Canine Fitness Center in Stafford, VA. I have been extremely busy working, taking classes, and completing an apprenticeship with Laurie Williams, Pup 'N Iron’s owner. Away from Pup ‘N Iron, I have
managed to train my sweet Dobie girl "Sidney" to earn her Canine Good
Citizen (CGC) at nine months of age and my precious Maltese boy "Sir
Ashton" (also known as "little man") to earn his CGC at seven
months of age and his Therapy Dog International (TDI) at 1 year of age.
Sidney’s quest for CGC was complicated by an illness that
took month’s to diagnose. She was listless, lost weight, vomited and had severe
diarrhea. I was fortunate to have Sidney included in a medical trial program
for dogs suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). After 3 months on the
medical trial, Sidney had an endoscopy which revealed an obstruction. The
obstruction turned out to be a piece of nylon bone wedged tightly between the
small intestine and the stomach. Sidney exhibited no signs of irritable bowel
syndrome after the obstruction removal but she continued to have severe
diarrhea.
After more tests, Sidney was diagnosed with severe
food allergies and also hypersensitivity to noise and new situations. She is
currently on Science Diet ZD Allergen Free Formula, dry food. She cannot have
any other food or treats and absolutely cannot have chew bones of any kind.
She is happy and thriving on this regimen and I am thrilled for her.
This narrative provides a quick glimpse into my life
and interests. I am happiest when I can help you as a pet owner overcome
obstacles and show you new ways to connect with your pets through exercise and
obedience. My goal is for training to be fun for both you and your pets. My enthusiasm
knows no boundaries! I thank God for my new career and look forward to helping you
very soon.
